The Internet of Things is the result of a work by MIT in 2009 and has the objective of connecting objects and devices to large network databases in order to promote a next step in the access to information, the man-machine and machine-machine communication. Initially the concept involved the RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) to identify the elements and wireless sensors to exchange information between the elements, but now, are already included in the Internet of Things concept low costs open-source technologies, Arduino for example.

As an example of Internet of Things (MIT , 1999), a plant that “warns” the owner via smartphone message or Twitter when it is thirsty. The “thing” is based on a sensor that collects soil moisture data and an Arduino (ARDUINO , 2013) connected to the Internet to the dealings of the data and notifications.

Spending on technology based on Internet of Things services , will generate global revenues of around $ 8.9 trillion in 2020.
